Queen of Tears is an upcoming South Korean television series that is set to premiere on March 9, 2024, on tvN. The series will also be available for streaming on TVING in South Korea, and on Netflix in selected regions. It is directed by Jang Young-woo and Kim Hee-won, and written by Park Ji-eun. The series stars Kim Soo-hyun as Baek Hyun-woo and Kim Ji-won as Hong Hae-in.
Queen of Tears tells the story of a married couple in crisis. Baek Hyun-woo, played by Kim Soo-hyun, is the son of Yongdu-ri and supermarket prince. He works as the legal director for the conglomerate Queens Group. Hong Hae-in, portrayed by Kim Ji-won, is the daughter of the family that owns and operates Queens Group. She is known as the “Arrogant Queen” at Queens Department Store.
The series is written by Park Ji-eun, who is known for her work on Crash Landing on You (2019-2020), My Love from the Star (2013-2014), and The Producers (2015). This is the third time that writer Park and Kim Soo-hyun have worked together. The series is co-directed by Jang Young-woo, who worked on Crash Landing on You (2019-2020) and Bulgasal: Immortal Souls (2021-2022), and Kim Hee-won, who worked on Vincenzo (2021) and Little Women (2022).
The series is produced by Studio Dragon, Culture Depot, and Showrunners. The budget for the series costed ₩40 billion (US$34.97 million) in total. Filming began in the first half of 2023 and is currently ongoing.
Park Sung-hoon, Kwak Dong-yeon, and Lee Joo-bin were cast for the series in February and April 2023, respectively. Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won were officially confirmed to appear in December 2022.
The series was originally part of tvN’s 2023 drama lineup and scheduled to be broadcast in December 2023, but it was moved to the first half of 2024 due to changes in tvN’s Saturday-Sunday lineup. It is now scheduled to air in March 2024.
